The Pledge of Allegiance

Currently, the Pledge of Allegiance reads:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

     However, the original Pledge read:

I pledge alligeance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands--one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Francis Bellany wrote the original Pledge in 1892. In 1923, the pledge was changed so that "my flag" became "the flag of the United States of America," although Bellany objected. In 1954, during the McCarthy era, the words, "under God," were added by an act of Congress after much political lobbying. The assumption was that all non-believers were Communists. I suspect Bellamy would not have liked this. It discriminates against atheists. Ironically, the pledge has been championed by various conservative groups, despite the fact that its author was a Socialist.
